These notes serve two purposes. They can be used as data for the software to work on (just hi-lite, copy and paste these notes or any part of them into the text box). They also provide some basic information about CADET_lite. CADET_lite has been developed to help authors and editors work on texts that must meet strict grading specifications. It provides immediate feedback, so it is possible to use this software to modify text quickly and reliably to requirement, on the spot. You can 'paste' any existing text including previously typed texts of your own, into the text box, or you can type new text in directly. The software will process texts up to about seven hundred and fifty words long, maybe a little more. To some extent text length depends in the platform and software version you are using, but CADET_lite does have a cut-off point, and will ignore anything much beyond the first eight-hundred words or so; fewer if you use many long words. Short texts, anything less than about 200 words long, will be 'padded'; that is, to ensure that the software works, passages of neutral, low-level text are placed on either side of the submitted text. Before submitting a text, make sure that the 'user' and 'password' boxes have been filled in correctly; then, after adding the text, press the GO button. Using a fairly modern computer and web browser you should received results within a second or two --even if you are connected to the internet via a low capacity dial-up line. Depending on the browser you are using, you may have to re-enter the password each time you make a submission. You should make sure your text consists only of alphanumerics, spacing and basic punctuation. Anything other than that will be 'purged'. This is mainly for security reasons. Adjustments can be made to any submitted text to see what effect they might have on the results. The bar-chart, for example will respond perceptibly to changes to the number and length of sentences, even in a relatively short text; also to some extent, to the replacing of less commonly used vocabulary with more familiar equivalents. The various counts can of course be checked against figures and indices given in your favourite word-processor. There may be slight variations, but in most cases not by more than a few per cent. The primary purpose of this software is for demonstration and experiment. However for short to medium-length texts, or for extracts from longer texts, sufficient information and functionality is provided to make this a useful writing and editing tool. (about 450 words)
